Bay Area Filmmaker A Contest Double Dipper

TAMPA - A St. Petersburg actor and filmmaker is in the running for a $1 million prize and the chance to have a commercial he created air during the Super Bowl.
Independent photographer Brent Harvey is one of 1,700 people who submitted homemade commercials to the Doritos "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, an annual online competition sponsored by the snack food company.

Harvey, who has been acting and making films for 10 years, created two commercials for the contest and appears in both of them.

In one, he plays a man who sees that attractive women can get free Doritos from a vendor, so he cross-dresses to get his snack food fix.

In the second ad, he plays a man whose girlfriend keeps him - literally - on a short leash, preventing him for getting his Doritos.

Tampa-St. Petersburg area actors Dustin Dailey, Mark Krautler, Michelle Baker, Candice Rojas and Nolan Heasley also appear in the commercials.

"I only found out about this contest four days before the deadline for submission," Harvey says. "It was a mad rush to come up with the ideas and get them produced in time. We went right down to the wire, finishing at just before midnight."

Harvey says while the $1 million would come in handy, the exposure on the Super Bowl is what motivated him.

"People would see that worldwide, and so much could follow," he says. "I also want to call attention to the talent that we have right here in this area."

Harvey needs the most votes in order to win.

"Just being in the contest is bringing us exposure," he says. "We want people from the Tampa Bay area to vote for us, but we want to win because these commercials are the best."
