The future of the Arena Football League was being discussed well into Sunday night.
The AFL's board of directors met via conference call Sunday evening to vote again on whether to suspend the 2009 season. It was the second meeting to discuss the matter in five days for the board of directors, comprised of a representative from each of the league's 16 teams and one representative from Gridiron Enterprises, which owns the league's patent. Wednesday, the board voted not to suspend the 2009 season.
According to Tampa Bay coach Tim Marcum, Sunday's meeting was called because a group of owners determined to suspend operations for the season had managed to gain additional support since the last meeting. Marcum said Columbus, Dallas and Philadelphia are the teams pushing hardest for the league to suspend operations until a new business model can be established.
A two-thirds majority vote from the board is needed to suspend operations, meaning 13 of the 17 board members must be in favor of the matter. Marcum said Saturday five teams - Tampa Bay, Orlando, Arizona, San Jose and New York - still were pushing to play this season.
