TAMPA - Delta Air Lines today began offering wireless Internet service on six aircraft flying between New York and Boston and New York and Washington and plans to expand the service throughout its fleet in 2009.
Passengers with laptops, smart phones and personal digital devices can search the Internet, check e-mail and text message for $9.95 on flights of three hours or less and $12.95 for longer flights.
The "Gogo" system that turns an aircraft into an Internet "hot spot" is provided by Colorado-based Aircell LLC, which launched airborne Wi-Fi on American Airlines during the summer.
Wi-Fi installation is expected to begin on jets flown by Northwest Airlines, which Delta acquired in October, in late 2009.
