TAMPA - Animals stuck in the county shelter for weeks or months need more than a cup of food.
"County budgets don't cover most of the comfort items, but, in fact, we find that many of these are necessities in order for us to do our jobs to the best of our ability," said Marti Ryan, community coordinator for Hillsborough County Animal Services.
To meet the critters' needs, the Animal Angel Tree is set up at the Falkenburg Road shelter in Tampa. All it needs is people willing to play Santa to animals in need.
Along with the toys and bedding, the shelter is accepting money for a medical fund and for food that will be passed on to needy pet owners to help them avoid having to leave their animals at a shelter, Ryan said. Tax dollars don't fund that program.
Gifts can be dropped off at the shelter and checks can be mailed to 440 Falkenburg Road, Tampa FL 33619. Makes checks out to BOCC and put "animal services" in the subject line. Call (813) 744-5660 for information.
