Alafia Elementary School will have a new principal by early January -- an announcement that comes one week after its embattled leader asked for a transfer.
Lisa Tierney-Jackson, who is principal at Cypress Creek Elementary School in Ruskin, will take over as Alafia's principal on Jan. 5.
Tierney-Jackson replaces Ellyn Smith, who leaves an intensely divided school. Parents have complained for months that Smith's leadership has led to high teacher turnover, poor morale and a lack of concern about student safety.
Smith's husband, retired Hillsborough Principal Ashley Smith, has said a vocal minority of parents branded his wife "the devil incarnate."
Smith and Superintendent of Schools MaryEllen Elia agreed that the turmoil had become a distraction for the school. Elia said she will transfer Smith, a 34-year veteran in the school system.
Wimauma Elementary School Principal Roy Moral will take over Tierney-Jackson's spot at Cypress Creek Elementary. Principal Jeff Millman, who is on special assignment, will become Wimauma Elementary's principal.
