TAMPA - The Salvation Army is starting to feel panicky. It's 500 frozen turkeys short for Christmas dinner.
With more than 5,300 families to feed, agency officials are turning to the public with a plea: 500 turkeys by Thursday.
"We are desperate," said general manager Steve Vick, who estimates his agency is feeding about 25 percent more families this year than last. "We just didn't get what was projected."
Some donors offer up to 1,000 turkeys at a time, Vick said, but this year a few regulars couldn't come through. In better times, The Salvation Army could make up the difference, Vick said, but not this year.
The turkeys are part of a distribution of gifts and a supermarket gift card that takes place Friday and Saturday.
Donations will be accepted at the army's Tampa headquarters, 1603 N. Florida Ave., from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
