Published: December 16, 2008

PALMETTO - - An eighth-grade student who police said brought a gun to school in his book bag was arrested Monday afternoon.

The 15-year-old, who attends Lincoln Middle School in Palmetto, kept the gun in his trousers and showed it off to other students.

Close to the end of the school day, the school resource officer disarmed and arrested the boy after students reported him.

The boy, whose name is being withheld by the Herald-Tribune because he is a juvenile, was arrested and spent the night in the county's juvenile detention facility.

He faces a charge of possession of a firearm on school grounds, a felony offense, and may face additional charges, police said. He will likely be expelled also.

Palmetto Police Department spokesman Lt. Scott Tyler said the youth told police he got the gun from a neighbor's house.

No students at the school were threatened or had the gun pointed at them, Tyler said.

"Throughout the school day he showed it off to students," said Palmetto Police Department spokesman Lt. Scott Tyler. "His quote was he wanted people to take him seriously."
