Chiefs GM Peterson Decides To Resign

Published: December 16, 2008

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Chiefs president and general manager Carl Peterson has resigned, effective at the end of the season.

Owner Clark Hunt confirmed the resignation Monday.

Peterson took over in 1989. He hired Marty Schottenheimer as coach and they built the Chiefs into an NFL powerhouse over the next 10 years.

However, Kansas City faltered the past decade and seemed to hit a low point with an emotionally draining 22-21 loss Sunday to San Diego, which left the Chiefs 2-12.

"On behalf of my family and the entire Kansas City Chiefs organization, I want to thank Carl for his two decades of service to the Chiefs," Hunt said in a written statement. "Both Carl and I agreed that immediately initiating the search for the next Chiefs general manager would be the best thing for the future of the organization, and he will be resigning following the 2008 season."

During Peterson's 20 years at the helm, the Chiefs amassed a 176-141-1 record, won the AFC West four times and reached the AFC Championship Game in 1993.

"I am proud of my association with the Kansas City Chiefs and our many accomplishments over the last 20 years," Peterson said in a statement released by the Chiefs. "I thank the Hunt family for the opportunity to lead the Chiefs organization and sincerely appreciate all the coaches, players, administrators and Chiefs employees with whom I've had the pleasure of working in my time here. Most importantly, I want to thank Chiefs fans around the country for their passionate support through the years. Chiefs fans are the finest in all of professional football."

Vice president Denny Thum will serve as interim president and general manager.

BILLS: Rookie wide receiver James Hardy will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee early in the first quarter against the Jets.

Hardy, the Bills' second-round pick out of Indiana, was hurt blocking down the right sideline on a 35-yard run by Marshawn Lynch. He had nine catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns this season.

CHARGERS: Wide receiver Malcom Floyd was hospitalized overnight in Kansas City after sustaining a collapsed lung in Sunday's victory against the Chiefs.

Floyd was flying to San Diego on Monday, Coach Norv Turner said.

"They wanted to do some tests on him," Turner said. "Things look good and it'll be day to day in terms of where he is at the end of the week and if he'd be available for the game."

GIANTS: Corey Webster, who has developed into one the NFL's top cornerbacks, signed a five-year, $43 million contract extension.

Webster will receiver $20 million in guaranteed money under the deal that runs through 2013. The fourth-year player would have been a free agent at the end of the season.

LIONS: Coach Rod Marinelli said quarterback Dan Orlovsky would make his second straight start in part because Daunte Culpepper is questionable because of a shoulder injury.

Orlovsky was 23 of 34 for 233 yards with a touchdown in a 31-21 loss at Indianapolis.

RAIDERS: Interim coach Tom Cable lashed out at assistant offensive line coach James Cregg, saying he quit on the team by leaving with two games left in the season to join former coach Lane Kiffin's staff at Tennessee.

Cregg told Cable of his decision to depart the Raiders on Sunday night, telling him he was taking a job with the Volunteers.

"Quite frankly, I'm disappointed by all these things, mostly by the fact that someone would quit on this organization, this football team and this head coach at this juncture," Cable said Monday. "It's wrong."

TITANS: Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch will miss the final two games of the regular season with injuries.

Haynesworth sprained his left medial collateral ligament with 92 seconds left in Sunday's 13-12 loss to the Houston Texans when players rolled up the back of his left leg, pushing his knee inward as he fell to the ground. Vanden Bosch has an injured groin.

VIKINGS: Defensive tackle Pat Williams will miss anywhere from two to six weeks with a fractured shoulder.
