The Florida High School Athletic Association released the reclassified football districts for the 2009 through 2011 seasons on Monday. The FHSAA also decided to revert back to a 16-district format for classifications 3A through 6A.
The changes are tentative and schools will have until noon on Jan. 9 to submit written requests for reassignment to a different classification and/or district.
Some of Hillsborough County's top programs were placed into new classifications and districts. Wharton, which advanced to the Class 5A region semifinals this past season, moved up to 6A; Plant, which will play in the 4A state title game Saturday, will move up to 5A; Jefferson, which has made consistently advanced to the 4A playoffs is now a 3A program, and Middleton, which has competed in 4A since it reopened in 2002, is placed in 2A.
"We'll take a look at it wholelistically as a district," Hillsborough County athletic director Lanness Robinson said. "It's tentative and we'll work through the natural questions people may have. We'll make a decision on what's best for the district and plan as geographically as possible."
