TAMPA - Downtown has become a little more colorful – at least at night.
The owners of the Sun Trust building this evening gave a test run to their new lighting system, which uses light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, whose colors can be switched easily by computer from inside the building.
The company hired a theatrical lighting company to install the outdoor lights. The LEDs replace the fluorescent bulbs, whose colors could only be changed by workers by hand with colored gels.
The new system is more expensive than the old, but bank officials say the system eventually will pay for itself by using less electricity.
