A 36-year-old motorcyclist is in critical condition today after colliding with a gate at a railroad crossing, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
Anthony J. Lonero of Tampa was riding a 2008 Ducati motorcycle west on Waters Avenue about 9 a.m., deputies say. Lonero did not stop for a railroad crossing gate, which was lowering for an approaching train, deputies say.
Lonero's face struck the crossing arm and he was ejected from the motorcycle, the sheriff's office said. He was not wearing a helmet, according to deputies.
Lonero was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. CSX railroad workers had to replace the damaged crossing arm, the sheriff's office said.
