Competing Newspapers Benefit Readers

Published: December 17, 2008

I wonder how many newspaper subscribers in the Bay Area know how rare our two-newspaper community is. Can anyone name more than one major newspaper currently serving our greatest cities?

I sincerely hope neither The Tampa Tribune nor St. Petersburg Times ever triumphs in the battle for ascendancy; the competition serves the reader far better than a one-paper news diet.

Both papers boast excellent city newsrooms and investigative reporting staffs. The reader only benefits; what would the point be if both papers carried the same coverage, exposed the same scandals, endorsed the same political candidates?

I am glad both the Tribune and the Times are working hard to earn my readership. The papers are doing their part. For my part, I will continue to subscribe to them both, patronize advertisers found in both papers' pages and use the classified advertising sections of both.
