Divided Alafia Elementary To Get New Leader

Alafia Elementary School will have a new principal by early January - an announcement that comes one week after its embattled leader asked for a transfer.

Lisa Tierney-Jackson, principal at Cypress Creek Elementary School in Ruskin, will take over as Alafia's principal on Jan. 5.

Tierney-Jackson replaces Ellyn Smith. Parents have complained that Smith's leadership has led to high teacher turnover, poor morale and a lack of concern about safety.

Smith's husband, retired Hillsborough principal Ashley Smith, has said a vocal minority of parents branded his wife "the devil incarnate."

Superintendent of Schools MaryEllen Elia said she will transfer Smith, a 34-year veteran in the school system.

Wimauma Elementary School Principal Roy Moral will take over Tierney-Jackson's spot at Cypress Creek Elementary.
