HUDSON - The "Little Beast" was wearing a massive smile Wednesday afternoon.
Hudson High senior Kalah St. Pierre won the 110-pound class at the Hudson High Girls Weightlifting Meet. "The Beast" had a 120-pound bench press and a 130-pound clean and jerk to get a personal best 250 pounds.
"Today, I did awesome," said St. Pierre. "Clean and jerk, I did 130. I went for first and I got it. Last year, I took first a couple of times. She (Brianna Hooker) wasn't here. Thank God. I don't want her to lift. She's coming. She's awesome. I want to go to state. I want to get to 135-pound with the power clean and jerk."
Hooker was tied for second in her weight class at the state meet.
The girl who beat the "Little Beast" last week decided she's going to spend a lot of time devouring food over the holidays.
Gulf High senior Ashley Mizrahi took second in the class with 125-bench and a 120-pound clean and jerk. Mizrahi, a state qualifier last year, won her battle with "The Beast" last week.
"I'm totally disgusted," said Mizrahi. "I realize I have been cutting too much weight and worried about my weight rather than lifting weight. I'm just going to go into the 119-pound class and be as strong as I can be. I'm fed up with being so weak.
"I think I lost because it is impossible for me to keep up strength and be at 110. Now, I can eat whatever I want and be strong. I think by the end of Christmas break, I will be benching 20 more pounds than I am now if I keep my weight up."
River Ridge High won the meet with 51 points. Hudson was second with 24 points. Gulf High was third with 18 points.
River Ridge coach Mike DeGennaro has high expectations for his girls. Six of the River Ridge girls won individual titles at the meet.
"We're a little bit off from what I was hoping," said DeGennaro. "That's really first- and second-meet jitters. I tell the girls the meets don't really matter until after Christmas. We're not as concerned with the outcome of the meet. We are more concerned about the conference (Sunshine Athletic Conference) and the (state) qualifier (in Belleview). We do them (the tri meets) to get them ready for the ones that matter."
"A couple of (Gulf) girls were a little bit weaker than normal," said Gulf High coach Bruno Buonsanto. "Overall, (they were) good. I'm proud of the girls. We're going to take this Christmas break and work a little harder. Some of them may bump up in weight. Ashley felt a little under the weather. Ashley Mizrahi is a little disappointed. Overall, I'm pleased with my girls."
"Again, our girls did well individually," said Hudson coach Tim White. "We have a small team. We don't have enough to challenge teams like River Ridge and Ridgewood that bring full squads. Kalah and Ashley went back and forth last year."
