A family of five and a menagerie of pets that ranged from mammals to reptiles escaped a kitchen fire today that did $10,000 damage, authorities say.
The fire started on a stove when a pan of hot oil was left unattended, St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Lt. Joel Granata said. Flames had engulfed the stove and cabinets and spread to the attic.
No one was hurt during the fire at 5630 32nd Terrace N., St. Petersburg.
Firefighters rescued the family dog. The homeowners had evacuated the other pets, including two birds, a ferret and snake, Granata said.
The American Red Cross is helping the family and their pets find temporary shelter.
