Pinellas County deputies say a used automobile dealer was rolling back odometers on vehicles he was selling.
Deputies arrested business owner John S. Creel, 45, of Treasure Island, at 11 a.m. today. He was charged with nine counts of odometer fraud.
The investigation began Nov. 24 when a man reported a discrepancy on an odometer reading of a vehicle he was considering buying from Creel Motors, 4870 66th St. N. in Kenneth City.
The man had seen a 1995 Nissan with a listed odometer reading of 83,000 miles. But when he ran the vehicle's VIN number to get its vehicle history, he learned it actually had 161,000 miles listed.
Deputies ultimately found nine vehicles with odometer discrepancies. The vehicles were seized.
Investigators say anyone who bought a vehicle from Creel Motors in the last three months with mileage under 100,000 and thinks they could be the victim of fraud should call Det. Troy Compton at (727) 582-6200.
