Hillsborough schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia is donating $42,437 she received in performance bonuses this year to the Hillsborough Education Foundation.
Elia sent the news this week to school board members in a two-sentence memo, indicating she wanted the money donated to teacher initiatives and other local charities and agencies that support the county's students and schools.
The performance pay comes on top of the superintendent's $257,958 salary. Elia gets money for schools that receive "A'' grades from the state, for student performance on test scores and on advanced placement exams, among other factors.
