What Some Readers Might Like

Published: December 19, 2008

If it were not for The Tampa Tribune, I wouldn't be here.

In the 1930s, when my dad was a kid, he delivered the Tribune to help his family buy food during the Great Depression. One of the customer's on his route was my grandfather. That's how my dad met my mother. Needless to say, I would be very sad if the Tribune were to go under. So do you mind if I tell you what I like to read about?

Regarding the letter "Poor Choices" (Dec. 18): It's clear that not everyone likes to read the same kind of news. The writer doesn't want to learn about every sexual assault and every pedophile in the area, but I do - every last one of them. And I want to see, on the front page, news about our sports' teams.

I don't live all over the world. I live right here. I want to know who I need to be afraid of, and I want to read good news, too.

I want to know which of my neighbors were arrested for sexual assault, drug-pushing, robbery or whatever. I want to know where the fire trucks that raced past my house last night were headed. And if there was a bad traffic accident down the road, I want to know about it; it might have involved someone I know. I also want to see, at a glance, if my local high school basketball team is winning.

There are things I just don't need to read about. For example, I already know that the economy is bad. I've heard my friend the carpenter say that pawn shops have stopped accepting tools because no one will buy them. And no one will buy them because no one is working. So why do I need to read about our bad economy when I have friends who can't get money for food, not even from a pawn shop?

I've also heard my parents speak about the high cost of prescription drugs. I know when the price of gas goes up and when it goes down. And I know that our president has been the worst president in American history. But I don't need to read about these awful things every single day of the week. Give me information I can use - today!

If someone wants to read about the world, all they have to do is log into Yahoo. So if I were running our local newspaper, I'd print mainly local news. And then, one day a week, I'd print world news, for the world news simply is not new. I'll bet you'd get more subscribers. I don't think I'm the only one who wants to wake up and find something "new and exciting" at my front door.
