DADE CITY - "The Polar Express" will be the final "movie in the park" for 2008.
The 2004 animated feature, to be shown Saturday, tells the story of a boy who boards a magical train destined for the North Pole. Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks voices several of the characters, including Santa.
The city began offering free movies on the grounds of the historic Pasco County Courthouse in April. The movies are projected onto an outdoor screen with surround sound using a Blu-ray, high-definition projector that was donated by Brandon Home Theater and Chevrolet of Dade City.
Mayor Scott Black said he plans to bring his 2½-year-old son to his first movie in the park. "He loves trains," Black said.
"He's a big fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, so I think he might enjoy this one."
City Commissioner Camille Hernandez said the starting time was moved up an hour - to 7 p.m. - so families with small children will be able to stay for the end of the holiday movie.
The festivities start at 5 p.m. at the Hugh Embry Branch Library, 14214 Fourth St., across from city hall. The library will host a game night featuring "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band." Also, Dade City Trolley Tours will provide free rides and a tour of the Train Depot Museum before the movie.
"At a time when people are feeling the pinch of the economy, there will be lots of free things for people to do the Saturday before Christmas," Hernandez said.
Agnes Lamb Park is at Eighth Street and Meridian Avenue in downtown Dade City. The free showing is hosted by the City of Dade City Youth Council and open to the public.
Those attending should bring chairs and blankets for seating. Refreshments will be available. For information, call (352) 523-5052.
