ZEPHYRHILLS - Following the lead of Tampa and St. Petersburg, Zephyrhills has submitted an economic stimulus wish list totaling nearly $18 million to the Florida League of Cities.
President-elect Barack Obama's advisers are contemplating an economic recovery plan that could cost as much as $1 trillion over two years. Obama has said he wants Congress to start working on the plan when it reconvenes in January.
Virtually every city and county in the nation is scrambling to come up with public works projects that could be ready to go in 2009. Pasco County submitted $1.4 billion in funding requests to the National Association of Counties.
For Zephyrhills, widening Eiland Boulevard, also known as County Road 54, from U.S. 301 to 23rd Street is the costliest project, topping out at $10 million. The project would alleviate congestion around Zephyrhills High School and create more than 40 jobs.
The city also is seeking a low-interest loan for $720,000 to renovate the downtown fire station, which was flooded earlier this year. Improvements to the retention pond next to the station would cost $160,000.
