GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Billy Nobles, left, with "Reel Animals" partner Mike Anderson.
Man, what a week, with the weather returning to that Chamber of Commerce commercial. Warm weather, warmer water, warmer fishermen, warmer fish - I love it.
With everything heating back up, the fishing has too. We had great catches of snook, redfish and trout, and the grouper bite is still on in the bay. A friend and his wife landed a 33-inch grouper this week inside the Skyway while trolling jigs.
Trout are almost in season, and we are catching quite a few trout in the 4- to 5-pound range.
There are a few good ways to catch trout. The first is the Love's Lure floating jig. When working this lure, cast it and let it sit. When the cork starts to go under, twitch it hard to make it swim across the top of the water, then repeat.
The DOA Shrimp works in the same situation, but tie it under one of the clacker corks. When you first cast out, wait for the cork to right itself then give it a jerk. After the cork makes the racket, repeat the process.
In deeper water you can't go wrong using the Gulp Baits. I like the shrimp on a jig head. Just work it slowly, bouncing it along the bottom.
Catch captains Billy Nobles and Mike Anderson on the "Reel Animals Fishing Show" on Saturdays from 6:30-7 a.m. and Sundays from 11-11:30 a.m. on WFLA, Ch. 8, and on Sundays from 8-10 a.m. on 1040 AM.
