Moore, UConn Women Win Big

CANCUN, Mexico - Faced with the unenviable task of facing the top-ranked Connecticut women, Northern Colorado coach Jaime White relied on a battled-tested methodology to motivate her team.

"We talked about how they are the same age as you are," White said. "You know, they have MySpace pages just like you do. Still, I think they were excited about playing one of the best teams we'll see, one of the best teams I've seen in all my years in basketball."

Sophomore forward Maya Moore scored 19 points to lead the top-ranked Huskies to an 85-40 rout of the smaller Bears (4-6) on Friday night in the Caribbean Classic.

Renee Montgomery added 15 points for the Huskies (9-0), who wiped out a first-half deficit with a 14-2 run that put the game in their control.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Kayla Pedersen and Jayne Appel each posted double-doubles and No. 3 Stanford (8-2) bounced back from its loss at Duke earlier this week.

Pedersen finished with 15 points and tied her career high with 16 rebounds. Appel added 15 points and 14 rebounds to send the Cardinal into the Tennessee contest back on pace.

WASHINGTON - DeWanna Bonner had season-highs of 30 points and 16 rebounds to lead No. 10 Auburn.

It was Bonner's third double-double of the season for the Tigers (11-0), playing their first game in 12 days. Whitney Boddie added 14 points.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Epiphanny Prince scored 23 points and Kia Vaughn added a season-high 13 to help No. 14 Rutgers win its fifth straight game.

Rutgers (7-2), which has won 19 straight home games, last held an opponent under 30 in November 2000, against Vermont. It was the fewest points that Lafayette had scored since 1996.

TALLAHASSEE - Xenia Stewart scored 27 points and the Panthers locked down on defense for their ninth straight win.

Pittsburgh (9-1) held Florida A&M (4-5) to one basket from the floor for the game's first 7 minutes, 58 seconds. Pittsburgh disrupted passing lanes and turned 17 turnovers into 26 points.

TENNESSEE STATE 82

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Hannah Tuomi scored a career-high 23 points and led four Vanderbilt players in double figures in a victory over Tennessee State.

Tuomi, a junior, also had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Commodores (9-2). Christina Wirth added 22 points, Jessica Mooney had 15 and Merideth Marsh 10.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 72

LAS VEGAS - Andrea Riley scored 35 points, and No. 22 Oklahoma State held off Southern Mississippi in the Desert Draw women's tournament hosted by UNLV.

Riley was 7-for-13 from the field and 19-for-25 from the foul line for the Cowgirls (6-2).

Devendorf To Miss 2 Games For Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse guard Eric Devendorf must perform 40 hours of community service and be reinstated by the university before he can play after being accused of hitting a female student.

Devendorf can petition to be readmitted for the spring semester that starts Jan. 12 if he completes the community service.

RICHMOND, Va. - Chas McFarland had 20 points and 14 rebounds as No. 10 Wake Forest was victorious.

The Demon Deacons (10-0) also got 21 points from Jeff Teague, including eight in a 17-6 run.

NO. 24 MARQUETTE 94,

WESTERN CAROLINA 77

MILWAUKEE - Lazar Hayward scored a career-high 27 points as No. 24 Marquette (9-2) ran away to a victory.

Jerel McNeal scored 19 and Wesley Matthews added 18 for Marquette, which made a strong recovery from its loss at Tennessee on Tuesday.
