TAMPA - Sickles took advantage of two moments of hesitant defending by Tampa Prep to record a surprising 2-0 victory on the opening day of the High School Invitational Tournament at the Ed Radice Sports Complex.
Sickles took the lead midway through the first half when Boris Simeunovic's cross from the right was met by Gonzalo Aguirre, who had edged in front of his defender to flick the ball into the left corner of the net.
Tampa Prep had its chances to tie it, with Wes Sever scuffing a shot wide in the first half and Gryphons goalkeeper Brandon Stout making an excellent save to preserve his fifth shutout of the season. Simeunovic then gave the Gryphons a two-goal lead as he beat his defender and the goalkeeper to a long throw-in, angling his shot into the vacant net.
Jesuit opened with a win, defeating Durant 2-1. Wharton beat Lake Mary 2-1, and Niceville defeated Tampa Catholic 1-0.
Elsewhere, Leto beat Alonso 3-1 to set up a game that could decide the pool against Land O' Lakes, which defeated Seminole 6-0. Berkeley Prep defeated Tallahassee Chiles 3-0.
