University of Georgia transfer Mike Mercer scored 12 points in his third game for South Florida.

Danero Thomas led the Racers with 16 points and Tyler Holloway added 11.

USF Women Win 6th Straight

TAMPA - The University of South Florida women's basketball team, playing its second game in three days, came out a bit sluggish after its record-setting 126-62 win Thursday against Grambling. However, USF was still good enough to defeat Northern Arizona, 82-43, in a nonconference game Saturday at the Sun Dome.

"I thought we played uninspired basketball today," USF coach Jose Fernandez said. "I can't put my finger on it, but we just seemed to be going through the motions. We had 18 turnovers, and of the 18, nine came from our post players. We just can't have that. We need to protect the basketball."

The Bulls (10-1) offset their 13 first-half turnovers by forcing Northern Arizona (3-9) into 18 miscues in the first stanza, which led to 18 of their 45 first-half points.

USF took a 45-19 lead into the break after shooting 42.1 percent (16-for-38) from the field and holding the Lumberjacks to 25 percent (8-for-32).

Northern Arizona's 19 points marked the third time this season a Bulls opponent was held to less than 20 points in a half.

The second half was not much better for the Lumberjacks as they were held scoreless for the first 5:09 before Simone Holmes hit a 3 to make the score 55-22.

USF extended its lead to 41 when Janae Stokes hit a jumper with 7:15 remaining. The Bulls would equal that margin one more time.
