One motorcyclist died and another left the scene following the crashes of two motorcycles on U.S. 301 near U.S. 41 on Sunday night.
Troopers say three motorcycles were riding in the area at a high rate of speed when two of the vehicles failed to negotiate a curve.
Dimitrios N. Kourkouliotis, 30, of Sarasota, died following the 10:05 p.m. crash.
Kourkouliotis lost control of his 1999 Kawasaki, the Florida Highway Patrol said. He was ejected from the vehicle and struck a wooden post attached to a guard rail, according to a news release. He slid to a stop on the shoulder of U.S. 301, and his vehicle traveled off the shoulder.
A 1986 Honda fell onto its side and struck a wall, and its driver slid to a stop on the west shoulder of U.S. 301, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release. The Honda's driver then ran from the scene, heading south on U.S. 41, troopers said.
The third motorcyclist returned to the scene following the crash but then left, heading north on U.S. 41, troopers said.
Anyone with information on the crash or who know the identities of the driver of the 1986 Honda and the third motorcyclist can call the Florida Highway Patrol at (941) 751-7647.
