TALLAHASSEE - Carole Crist easily stepped into her public role as Florida's new first lady as she handed out gift-wrapped books to foster children Sunday at the governor's mansion.
After mingling with children and child welfare officials, sipping punch and walking hand-in-hand, Gov. Charlie Crist and his new wife sat in chairs by a fireplace as children read "The Twelve Days of Christmas in Florida."
Back from a quick honeymoon to Useppa Island near Fort Myers, the event was Carole Crist's public debut as first lady after exchanging vows with the governor Dec. 12 in St. Petersburg. She made a strong impression on the children and adults at the event.
"She's very personable and she's making a priority of children, that's impressive," Department of Children & Families Secretary George Sheldon said. "She did great. She did excellent. They really do look like a perfect couple."
And she looked comfortable in her new role.
"Very good," she said encouragingly as the children read. As she and the governor handed out presents, she said, "Merry Christmas, sweetie" and gently touched children on the arm and complimented them on their clothes.
After the children's event, Crist handled her first meeting with the news media since the wedding with ease, saying she has had an idea of the attention that comes with being first lady.
She also said she wants to use her role in a positive way.
The couple later hosted a menorah lighting celebration with a local rabbi and members of Tallahassee's Jewish community.
