Nearly 30 months after an Israeli soldier was captured, students demanded his release in a protest outside the prime minister's office in Jerusalem.
Gilad Schalit was captured June 25, 2006, by Palestinians who tunneled into Israel and has been held in Gaza since. He last contacted his family in June, when a letter was faxed to the Carter Center's Ramallah office during discussions of prisoner swaps. In the letter, Schalit said he was in poor health.
In the West Bank, Palestinian women called for the release of prisoners from Israeli jails. Israel released 224 Palestinian prisoners last week in a gesture to moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. There are still about 9,000 Palestinians being held in Israeli prisons.
