Published: December 22, 2008

NORTH TAMPA - Students at Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School will soon begin a yearlong health and fitness program with the goal of having some participate in the 2010 Gasparilla Marathon.

The school, 11602 N. 15th St., will implement a program next month called Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds. It will fight childhood obesity and raise money for student programs and scholarships.

Principal Phildra Swagger outlined the program to the school's board of directors recently. She said she wants the school's mindset to be that of the TV show "Biggest Losers."

The program will include Saturday walks; Swagger plans to ask parents to help identify safe trails. Corporate sponsorships also will be sought.

Homeless Will Be Remembered

HUDSON - Angela Littlefield encountered a slight problem when she tried to compile a list of Pasco County homeless people who died this year as part of an annual Homeless Persons' Memorial Day planned from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today.

Littlefield, director of Gulf Coast Community Care's homeless shelter for women and children, checked with the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's Office, but was told the medical examiner doesn't keep such statistics.

So Littlefield tried a less official approach, asking for names from agencies that work with homeless people.

The names she was able to collect will be attached to a balloon to be released into the sky.

The Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, open to the public, will be at the Gulf Coast Community Care homeless shelter, 7801 Maryland Ave., Hudson.

Pasco Aims For Federal Funding

NEW PORT RICHEY - Pasco County commissioners - last week - created a list of seven road projects they hope will qualify for federal funding under a prospective economic stimulus plan proposed by President-elect Barack Obama.

The projects were placed atop $1.4 billion in projects the county will submit to the federal government for support from the proposed $700 billion public works-oriented stimulus. The projects on the list qualified for consideration because they were deemed "shovel ready" and could start within the next two years, County Administrator John Gallagher said.

The project list will be forwarded to the National Association of Counties, which is compiling a roster of prospective projects that could benefit from the stimulus spending, county officials say.

At the top of the project list is $33.5 million to widen U.S. 41 between Tower Road and Connerton Boulevard in Land O' Lakes.

New Church, Simple Message

RIVERVIEW - South County Christian Fellowship, a new church in Riverview, hopes only to relay a simple message: people can grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ, said Pastor Chip Holmes.

Holmes recently relocated his small congregation from a rented space on U.S. 301 to the South Pointe clubhouse.

"We believe God has given us a plan for our lives," he said. "We're kind of like a ministry to the community."

The nondenominational congregation meets at 10 a.m. each Sunday and once monthly for a potluck, prayer and fellowship. The church also offers small group ministries for men and women.

To introduce the church to the community, members are planning a service at 6 p.m. Wednesday, featuring seasonal music and a Christmas message. Hot chocolate and cookies will follow.

The clubhouse is inside the South Pointe community at 10520 Southern Pointe Blvd., Riverview. Call (813) 758-3406.

Fruit Is Topic Of Next Meeting

ODESSA - Plant lovers can learn all about Dooryard Fruit on Jan. 7 when Jim Hawk, the county's master gardener of the year, speaks at the Town 'N Country Garden Circle.

Through the master gardener program, volunteers are trained by Hillsborough County's Extension Service about gardening and horticulture. Those volunteers then field questions from the public, give lectures and participate in community projects.
