ORLANDO - With fewer than two weeks until 2009, authorities say the Orlando area has broken its all-time annual murder record this year.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office reports that three separate fatal shootings over the weekend put the city over the top, bringing the death toll for 2008 to 123. The Orlando area - which includes unincorporated areas, Orlando and nine other cities - also broke its previous murder record two years ago with 121 killings.
Robberies and other types of violent crime are down, but overall crime remains above levels from three years ago, when a surge of homicides began. This year, Orange County alone had 72 murders. Last year, there were 58, down from 64 in 2006.
