When Tampa police officers saw a stolen vehicle heading south on North 33rd Street near East Lake Drive on Monday night, they tried to stop it.
But the driver, 25-year-old Eugene Varzell Everett, continued driving and jumped out of the moving car a few blocks later, then tried to run away, police say.
Officers found the Thonotosassa man hiding behind a home following the 8:30 p.m. incident. Officers searched him and found a flathead screwdriver in his pants pocket, a criminal arrest affidavit states.
The stolen vehicle, a purple 1995 Nissan Altima, struck a tree. Its airbag deployed, and the cost of damage to the vehicle was estimated to be $3,000, according to the affidavit.
Everett was charged with fleeing to elude, felony criminal mischief, grand theft auto, being a habitual traffic offender, reckless driving and possession of burglary tools. He also had warrants on failing to appear in court.
He remains in Orient Road Jail today. No bail has been set.
