TAMPA - Local federal prosecutors were able to recover more $19 million from various forfeiture laws in the past fiscal year, U.S. Attorney A. Brian Albritton said today.
The cash was collected in the U.S. District Court's Middle District of Florida, which stretches from Jacksonville to Fort Myers and includes the Tampa area.
Albritton said about $8 million of the total went to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. He said about $6 million was used to compensate victims.
"Those who break the law will face not only prison time, but also will forfeit their ill-gotten gains," Albritton said.
The money was collected in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. More than 200 federal forfeiture laws have been enacted.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office received $280,110, the Tampa Police Department, $129,746; The Pinellas Sheriff's Office, $410,397; the St. Petersburg Police Department, $123,746; the Clearwater Police Department, $115,334; the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, $156,673; and the Polk County Sheriff's Office, $149,950.
