G.I. Jobs, a magazine that helps military personnel transition to the civilian workforce, has named Progress Energy one of the top 50 military-friendly employers, the utility announced this week.

Progress Energy moved to 26th on the list, up from 39th last year. This is the third year the company has been on the list. The company was selected from a pool of 2,500 companies with annual revenues of at least $1 billion.

The companies were evaluated based on their military hiring practices. Progress Energy stood out because it employs a recruiter charged with finding military personnel. Each year, more than 300,000 people and their spouses leave the military and enter the civilian workforce, the utility said.

Raleigh, N.C.-based Progress Energy is the parent company of St. Petersburg-based Progress Energy Florida, which provides electricity to nearly 1.7 million customers.
