Fire crews were called out to a fire early today at J.L. Young Apartments, 8220 N Florida Ave., Tampa Fire Rescue said.
According to a report, a 911 call at 2:17 a.m. reported a blaze in Apt. 306. At the scene, crews saw smoke coming out of the three-story building, and the third-floor hallway full of smoke. They found an unconscious man on the floor.
Raul Pagan, 58, was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in serious condition, according to the report. Later, he was flown to an Orlando-area hospital for treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, fire officials said.
Other crews quickly extinguished the fire in Apt. 306, which appeared to start on a couch. Crews said the fire did not appear suspicious, and the cause of the blaze may have been discarded smoking materials.
A woman was treated for a minor injury and taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in good condition, according to the report.
The smoke in the hallway caused 14 apartments to be temporarily evacuated.
