Florida Lawmakers Share In Commemoration

WASHINGTON - Here's a few of the dozens of commemorative resolutions sponsored or co-sponsored this session by Florida's two U.S. senators and the Tampa Bay area members of the U.S. House.

Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson

Prime sponsor of:

•A measure to recognize Feb. 17, 2008, as Race Day in America in honor of the Daytona 500. Passed;

•A resolution encouraging the recognition of the Negro Baseball Leagues and their players on May 20 of each year. Has not passed;

•A bill to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's 50th anniversary: Has not passed.

•A resolution recognizing the 60th anniversary of Everglades National Park. Passed.

Republican Sen. Mel Martinez

Prime sponsor of:

•A resolution recognizing the efforts and contributions of outstanding Hispanic scientists in the United States. Passed.

•A resolution recognizing the work of Herbert Saffir, inventor of the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Has not passed.

Co-sponsor of:

•A resolution designating July 26, 2008, as National Day of the Cowboy. Passed.

•A resolution congratulating the Focus on the Family radio program for its induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Has not passed.

•A resolution honoring the contributions of the Rocky Mountain Senior Games on its 30th anniversary for significantly improving the health and well-being of older Americans. Passed.
