Florida Lawmakers Share In Commemoration

WASHINGTON - Here's a few of the dozens of commemorative resolutions sponsored or co-sponsored this session by Florida's two U.S. senators and the Tampa Bay area members of the U.S. House.

Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson

Prime sponsor of:

•A measure to recognize Feb. 17, 2008, as Race Day in America in honor of the Daytona 500. Passed;

•A resolution encouraging the recognition of the Negro Baseball Leagues and their players on May 20 of each year. Has not passed;

•A bill to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's 50th anniversary: Has not passed.

•A resolution recognizing the 60th anniversary of Everglades National Park. Passed.

Republican Sen. Mel Martinez

Prime sponsor of:

•A resolution recognizing the efforts and contributions of outstanding Hispanic scientists in the United States. Passed.

•A resolution recognizing the work of Herbert Saffir, inventor of the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Has not passed.

Co-sponsor of:

•A resolution designating July 26, 2008, as National Day of the Cowboy. Passed.

•A resolution congratulating the Focus on the Family radio program for its induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Has not passed.

Prime sponsor of:

•A resolution to support the goals and ideals of Children's Health Month. Passed.

Co-sponsor of:

•A resolution expressing support for designation of a National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day. Passed.

•A resolution expressing support for the designation of a Public Radio Recognition Month. Passed.

•A resolution congratulating the NFL champion Indianapolis Colts for winning Super Bowl XLI and for bringing the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana the Lombardi Trophy. Passed.

Republican Rep. C.W. Bill Young of Indian Shores

•A resolution congratulating University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow for winning the Heisman Trophy. Passed.

•A resolution honoring the life of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, champion of the Florida Everglades and founder of Florida's environmental movement. Passed.

•A resolution honoring the life, achievements and contributions of Charlton Heston. Passed.

•A resolution commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Archdiocese of New York. Passed.

Republican Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite of Brooksville

•A resolution expressing the unconditional support of the House of Representatives for the members of the National Guard. Passed.

Co-sponsor of:

•A resolution supporting the "goals and ideals of a National Suffragists Day." Has not passed.

•A resolution expressing the sense of Congress that there should be established a National Pet Week. Has not passed.

•A resolution honoring the contributions of the Rocky Mountain Senior Games on its 30th anniversary for significantly improving the health and well-being of older Americans. Passed.

Republican Gus Bilirakis of Palm Harbor

•A measure commemorating the 85th anniversary of the founding of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading association for the nation's 1.3 million American citizens of Greek ancestry. Passed.

•A resolution celebrating the birth of Abraham Lincoln and recognizing the prominence the Declaration of Independence played in the development of Abraham Lincoln's beliefs. Has not passed.

•A resolution expressing support of the goals and ideals of National Carriage Driving Month. Passed.

•A resolution commemorating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Has not passed.
