Christmas Melee, Stabbing Land Tampa Man In Jail

TAMPA - A Tampa man remained in jail today after the Christmas night stabbing of another man during a melee at the defendant's apartment.

Vicente B. Garcia, 38, 2011 E. 143rd Ave., Apt. E, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Bail was set at $7,500, jail records said. He is an illegal immigrant and remains in jail without bail, jail records show.

According to an arrest affidavit, Garcia was present when two men got into a fight with a friend of his.

Garcia stepped in and showed the knife in an attempt to defend his friend. When another man, identified as Pablo Cobilla, stepped in, he was stabbed in the lower abdomen, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies said the wound was an inch-and-a-half wide and 2 inches deep. Cobilla's medical condition was not available. It was unknown if he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred at 11:25 p.m. Thursday.
