Lake Wales Detective Hits Pedestrian With Car, Deputies Say

A 43-year-old Lake Wales police detective struck and injured a pedestrian Saturday night as the woman tried to cross the road on Central Avenue in Lake Wales, authorities said.

Polk County sheriffs' deputies said the accident occurred at 6:18 p.m. when Detective Bruce Yoxall, who was eastbound on Central Avenue, struck 47-year-old Shelby Angeli of Stuart Avenue.

Deputies said it appears that Angeli stepped into the path of the unmarked 1999 Ford Taurus. Yoxall was on duty at the time, deputies said.

A 1992 Oldsmobile behind the Taurus rear-ended the unmarked car, deputies said. The driver, 69-year-old Shirley Foster of Masterpiece Road, was not injured.

Angeli was flown to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and was listed in stable condition Saturday night, deputies said. Yoxall was not injured.
