For the second time in his career, University of South Florida junior guard Mike Mercer has a torn ACL in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the season.
"It puts a lot more pressure on Dominique Jones and Jesus Verdejo. They're pretty much our firepower, and we were anticipated Mike to be our third option," Bulls coach Stan Heath said. "So if he's not there, that's a weapon we're missing. It sets us back a little bit, but we just have to fight through it."
Mercer, who transferred from Georgia, injured his knee last week against Wright State in the San Juan Shootout. He averaged 8.5 points in the four games he played after becoming eligible earlier this month.
Mercer also tore his right ACL on Feb. 10, 2007, while at Georgia.
