A 45-year-old man escaped seriously injury Sunday night after the interior of his 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560 SL burst into flames, authorities say.
James Nowacki, of North Redington Beach, told investigators that he was fishing and then went to his car to retrieve a lantern after it got dark, St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Lt. Joel Granata said.
As Nowacki lit the lantern, the inside of the car caught fire. He was not hurt when the car burst into flames, Granata said.
Nowacki told investigators that he filled the lantern with fuel before he left to go fishing near southbound Interstate 275 and Fourth Street North and left it on the front seat of his car.
