A New Way To Enjoy Holiday

Lightning center and No. 1 overall draft pick Steven Stamkos is making the transition this season from junior star to NHL regular. Throughout the season, the 18-year-old from Markham, Ontario, will share his experiences with Tribune writer Erik Erlendsson to give readers an insight into a new way of life during his rookie journey.

We returned from Pittsburgh late on Tuesday morning, so I went out and picked up my parents and sister on Christmas Eve and we did a little shopping, picking up a turkey. My dad Chris cooked that up. He made some of his famous homemade stuffing, which is really good - I probably could have eaten the whole thing, except I wouldn't have been able to skate this weekend. My dad wound up doing a majority of the cooking, and it was just like old times with the family.

It was a little weird not having snow on Christmas, so we had a good walk down the beach. We got a little bit of white in our Christmas there. It was probably pretty cool for them to experience a Christmas outside the cold weather, which was something new not only for them, but me as well. It's been nice to have them down and enjoy the week with them.

We went to the beach wearing shorts and flip-flops, although we had to put on the sweaters because it was a little windy down by the water. We threw the football around a little bit and just enjoyed the day.

For presents, I got my mom a kit from The Body Shop and a spa treatment over at the yacht club, so she'll enjoy that. For my dad I got him a golf shirt and a mock shirt and for my sister, she received some clothes and a digital camera, so I think they were pretty happy.

My parents will be in town for most of the week before we head out on the road, but my sister is leaving a little early so she doesn't miss her New Year's Eve parties.
