A Dunedin man beating a dog threatened to shoot the person who saw him harm the animal, Pinellas County deputies say.
Deputies arrested 20-year-old Cody Currie on Sunday night at his apartment, 950 Beltrees St. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, cruelty to animals and unlawful discharge of a firearm from within an occupied dwelling.
Currie's neighbor told deputies that "he saw the suspect beating his dog with his open hand, throwing the animal against the window and yelling profanities at it," a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office news release states. "When the complainant yelled out to the suspect to stop hurting the animal, the suspect picked up a rifle and threatened to shoot the complainant."
The neighbor called 911, and deputies arrived 9:08 p.m. Sunday.
Deputies were cautious and took cover.
One deputy knocked on Currie's door and stepped aside. That's when deputies heard the rifle discharge a bullet, according to the release.
"It was later discovered that a shot had been fired in the direction of the front door, near the location where the deputy who had knocked had been standing," the release states.
Deputies ordered the people inside the home to come out, and Currie and another person left the home.
No person was injured.
The dog, a black pit bull mix, has been turned over to Animal Control Services, as was another dog at the home.
An investigation is ongoing.
