Regarding "Overhaul Zoo's Board, But Don't Toss It To Wolves":
Please throw the Lowry Park Zoo board to the wolves!
Your editorial points out that the board lacked oversight, ignored warnings and generally seemed disconnected from the zoo's activities. Isn't this the same type of lack of oversight exhibited by government regulators that has led to our current economic meltdown?
The problem with this board and other Tampa organizations like the Tampa Museum of Art is that they are manned by people who use their board representation to either enhance their resumes, their standing in the community or to gain business relationships. It becomes a social organization for the wealthy and well-connected.
Because of their wealth, power or family connections they are not used to hearing the word "no" or taking constructive criticism so they turn a deaf ear to criticism from others until events blow up and they are forced to make decisions and take actions. They also like to play along and be nice. So they are not going to turn on one of their own well-connected and wealthy fellows like Lex Salisbury, and tell him - gasp! - no!
I say send the pampered poodles packing!
