TAMPA - Florida orange growers have harvested 6.5 percent more fruit so far this season.
According to the Citrus Administrative Committee in Lakeland, Florida growers harvested 27.9 million boxes of oranges from September through Dec. 28, up from 26.2 million boxes during the same period of 2007.
However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture still expects Florida growers will produce 165 million boxes this season, down from 170 million boxes last season. Each box weighs 90 pounds.
