Former Plant High School quarterback Robert Marve has asked for and been granted his release from the University of Miami after speaking today with Hurricanes head coach Randy Shannon, the school has announced.

The stipulations regarding Marve's release were not immediately known, so it is unclear if Marve is free to transfer to any program or if Miami would block Marve's potential transfer to a rival school or future opponent.

Marve, a redshirt freshman, completed 116 of 213 passes for 1,293 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 11 games for the Hurricanes in 2008 as he split time under center with freshman Jacory Harris.

He was suspended for the Hurricanes' Emerald Bowl game against California for violating team rules, the second suspension for Marve during the 2008 season. He was also suspended for Miami's season-opener against Charleston Southern after violating team rules during the 2007 season, one he missed after recovering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Marve was a Parade All-American as a high school senior after leading Plant to the Class 4A state championship in 2006. He chose the Hurricanes over the University of Alabama, a program he committed to prior to the start of his senior season but backed off after head coach Mike Shula was fired.

If Marve transfers to another Division I football program, he would be forced to sit out the 2009 season. He would then have two years of eligibility remaining.
