Don't Shut Us Out
The number of year-end films being released in selected cities, usually New York and Los Angeles, is growing. The reason is clear: Films that have Oscar-winning potential have the greatest impact on voters just about the time the motion picture industry members vote. Yet to qualify, they have to be released by the end of 2008.
This is a bit annoying. Why should living any other place in the country than the above cities relegate our year-end film viewing to ones with little or no critical acclaim?
The solution is to require films to be distributed nationally for Oscar consideration.
This also would also give films released before November a better chance at competing for awards.
