House Fire Ruled An Arson

A suspicious fire caused $120,000 damage to a Tampa home from which the renters had just moved out, investigators say.

Tampa Fire Rescue crews found smoke and flames pouring from the two-story home at 811 E. Curtis St. about 4:42 a.m. Monday. It took about 25 minutes to get the fire under control. Nobody was in the home and no injuries were reported, officials said. Investigators were told the renters moved out this weekend.

The Tampa fire marshal's office ruled the fire an arson. It is under investigation.

Man Says Plea Led To Threat

A Dunedin man beating a dog threatened to shoot the person who saw him harm the animal, Pinellas County deputies say.

Deputies arrested 20-year-old Cody Currie on Sunday night at his apartment, 950 Beltrees St. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, cruelty to animals and unlawful discharge of a firearm from within an occupied dwelling.

Currie's neighbor told deputies "he saw the suspect beating his dog with his open hand, throwing the animal against the window and yelling profanities at it," a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office news release states. "When the complainant yelled out to the suspect to stop hurting the animal, the suspect picked up a rifle and threatened to shoot the complainant."

The neighbor called 911, and deputies arrived 9:08 p.m. One deputy knocked on Currie's door and stepped aside. That's when deputies heard the rifle discharge a bullet, the release stated.

Deputies ordered the people inside the home to come out, and Currie and another person left the home.

Two dogs in the home were turned over to Animal Control Services.

Pregnant Woman Victimized

A Plant City man entered a pregnant neighbor's bedroom while she was sleeping and touched her inappropriately before the woman woke and told him to stop, Hillsborough County deputies say.

Deputies arrested 22-year-old Benacia Ramirez at 10:08 p.m. Sunday. He was charged with battery on a pregnant woman and burglary with battery.
