LAND O' LAKES - Progress Energy plans to build a substation along U.S. 41 in Pasco County, just north of State Road 54.
The St. Petersburg-based power company, one of three that serve Pasco County, bought the 21-acre tract just south of Morgan Road in September for more than $6 million, according to county property records.
Crews will begin studying possible routes for new transmission lines next year, according to company spokeswoman Suzanne Grant.
"The plan is to use existing right of ways; however, route studies have not yet begun – nor have building permits," Grant said.
Construction would begin in 2011, she said.
The new substation is intended to increase reliability and capacity in Pasco, Grant said.
The facility will be connected to existing Tampa Electric Co. power lines, she said.
