TAMPA - While people around Tampa Bay ring in the New Year with revelry and fireworks, their pets likely will be cowering in a corner.
Hillsborough County Animal Services is offering a few guidelines for keeping pets safe and comforted during New Year's celebrations:
Make sure all pets are wearing an identification tag that is securely fastened.
Keep all doors closed, because holiday traffic can equal tragedy for pets.
Walk Fido early, before the fireworks begin.
Provide pets a room where they can stay away from noise and guests. Play a radio or television at a moderate level and provide proper ventilation but not an escape route.
Never leave pets unattended in vehicles.
Talk to a veterinarian about additional measures to calm pets, if necessary.
Use caution when approaching lost (frightened) pets and report your find to an animal shelter.
Retrieve pets from shelters as soon as possible.
