DEBARY - The city of DeBary's incoming mayor says he doesn't want a salary.
Mayor-elect Bob Garcia recently told the city's finance administrator to keep the $600 per month and apply it where it's needed.
The 58-year-old retired Army veteran says being mayor of the city of DeBary is a privilege and honor that has nothing to do with salary.
The salary might not seem like a huge dent in the city's budget - which runs into the millions - but Garcia says the money could be used to fill small gaps created by recent budget cuts. For example,
officials had to cut back on Christmas decorations because of a lack of funds.
Garcia says he wants to lead by example and do what is in the best interest of the city.
