Regarding "Landfill a Good Deal for Pasco," (Other Views, Dec. 26) Bill Newton is only telling part of the story about the landfill proposed for Pasco County. The issue is not the need for a hi-tech way to dispose of garbage. The reason many of us oppose it is that the developers want to put the landfill close to the Green Swamp, which supplies all the water for the Hillsborough County watershed.
This water source provides clean, potable water for a million residents of Hillsborough, including all of Tampa. Pasco County ranks among the highest in the state for sinkholes, so placing tons of garbage on land that could collapse into the aquifer is irresponsible. This would be a hazard to the health of an important ecosystem at a time when we supposedly understand the fragility of our planet to human intrusions.
