TAMPA - Thursday's Outback Bowl will have a unique group of spectators: law enforcement officers checking whether their security plans for the upcoming Super Bowl need adjusting.
The 11 a.m. game between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Iowa Hawkeyes at Raymond James Stadium is a "dry run" for the local, state and federal agencies preparing for the Feb. 1 championship, Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.
"We're going to do some test scenarios as if there were an incident," she said.
Dubbed Operation Boomerang, the tests also give the agencies the opportunity to check minutiae such as operable phone lines at the joint operations center, she said.
